There is a true story, and there is a novel. The true story is that of Franca Viola, the Sicilian girl who in the mid-1960s was the first, after suffering violence, to refuse the so-called “shotgun wedding.” The novel takes its cue from that story, evokes it and reconstructs it, reinventing the real in the magical order of the tale.
At the beginning Oliva is a 15-year-old girl who, in the Italy of those years, where the law stipulated that if the perpetrator of the crime of rape then married the “offended party,” he would automatically extinguish the sentence (even if to the damage of a minor), seeks her place in the world. And, in a universe that maintains that “the female is a jug, whoever breaks her gets her,” Oliva tells us, now an adult, her story backwards, from the time when she was a little girl facing life until the moment when, with a decision that arouses scandal and amazement especially because it is unprecedented and revolutionary, she rejects the classic “paciata” and says no to violence and abuse.
