Othello, a general in the service of Venice, wins the love of the beautiful and noble Desdemona, whom he marries in great secrecy. He also arouses Iago‘s hatred for not being appointed his lieutenant. A role for which the Moor has chosen Cassio. On the night Desdemona’s father learns of his daughter’s marriage, Othello is given the task by the Doge to command the Serenissima’s army against the Turks on the island of Cyprus. The Moor then leaves for the mission with Cassio, Desdemona, Iago and his wife Emilia, who will be tasked with keeping Desdemona company. They are joined by Roderigo, who from the beginning has unsuspectingly served the cunning Iago in his wicked scheme. It is in Cyprus, in fact, that Iago instills in the Moor the doubt of Desdemona’s betrayal. The woman, however, is innocent, as is the good Cassio to whom the role of lover is falsely attributed.
Othello is now a slave to jealousy and, out of his mind, performs the most tragic of actions: he kills the woman he loves and then also takes his own life.
