Willy Loman is a smooth talking salesman. He likes to think of himself as being vital to the territory he works, he raised his children to be superficial, failing and vain individuals. Miller uses the Loman family to construct a self perpetuating cycle of denial and contradiction, mixing truth and hallucination and allowing the audience into the mind of his protagonist. The play struck at the time for its novelty, pushing directors such as Elia Kazan and Luchino Visconti to find solutions for a cinematic narrative and is still, to this day, exciting and modern.
